New Recommendations on Vitamin D Intake

The American Academy of Pediatrics is now recommending that all infants, children and adolescents receive at least 400 IU of Vitamin D daily. This is the amount of Vitamin D in 32 ounces of infant formula or Vitamin D enriched milk.

All breast fed and partially breast fed infants should now begin Vitamin D supplementation within the first few weeks of life. This supplementation should continue unless the infant is weaned to at least 32 ounces per day of infant formula or whole milk.

All nonbreastfed infants, as well as older children and adolescents, should take Vitamin D supplementation unless they ingest at least 32 ounces per day of infant formula or whole milk.

Vitamin D supplementation is most easily accomplished with either liquid or tablet multivitamin preparations that include 400 IU of Vitamin D.
