Amoxicillin Challenge

Why participate:

Research shows that 95% of those listed as allergic to amoxicillin are not truly allergic. Removing the amoxicillin allergy label allows for more antibiotic choices and reduces the risk of antibiotic resistance.

Who is eligible:

Children over age 5, whose initial reaction occurred over 1 year ago, and whose reaction was mild (such as a rash or hives) may be eligible to participate. Those with respiratory symptoms, facial swelling, swollen joints, or severe rashes do not qualify for testing in our office, but may be eligible for testing by an allergist.

How is the protocol done:

  1. An initial set of vital signs is obtained (weight, temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate)
  2. Review consent form with a provider and sign
  3. Initial brief exam
  4. Administer 10% of amoxicillin dose based on weight
  5. Wait 20 minutes, then conduct another brief exam.
  6. Administer 90% of amoxicillin dose based on weight
  7. Wait 20 minutes, then conduct another brief exam
  8. Wait another 20 minutes and conduct one final exam
  9. If no reaction, you’re not allergic to amoxicillin!
  10. We will call the following day to check in and ensure no delayed reaction
  • If at any point a reaction occurs, we are fully prepared to treat in the office.  The most common reaction is a rash.
  • The entire procedure takes a little more than an hour
